Apple Cider Vinegar & Alkalinity

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a gem in the superfood health world. We’ve talked about how it is sometimes connected to digestive health, but some nutritionists also link it to alkalizing pH levels in your body.

We know what you’re thinking–what in the world is a pH and alkalinity? (And if you already know, then great, here’s a refresher!) Without boring you with all the scientific details, let’s put our lab coats on and dive in!

pH, Acidity and Alkalinity

Every water-soluble substance (or solution) has a pH level, which stands for “power of hydrogen.” That’s just a fancy way of describing how many hydrogen ions are present in a solution. The scale ranges from 0 to 14, with a neutral level at 7. Anything under 7 is considered more acidic, while anything closer to 14 is considered alkaline.

Body pH

Our bodies have multiple pH levels–including our blood, and even our stomachs. Your body naturally balances your pH, to the best of its abilities. Most nutritionists suggest that our bodies’ pH levels lean slightly to the alkaline, but that depends on which part of the body. For example, your stomach will most likely be more acidic, which makes total sense! Acid is needed to help gastrointestinal functions, like dissolving enzymes. But for the most part, The American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) reports your body’s pH level should be around 7.4, which is usually tested by saliva, urine or blood sample.

If your body’s pH level (not counting your stomach) is acidic, there may be a problem, including acidosis (an excess of acid in the body). This can happen if your liver lungs and kidneys can’t balance your body’s acidity in, leading to complications like kidney failure. Acidosis is most likely to occur when there is an underlying condition.

Apple Cider Vinegar and pH

So, where does apple cider vinegar come in? Well, many nutritionists believe that among a bunch of other health benefits, ACV can help your body maintain a balanced pH. This is because of its nature. Vinegar goes through a fermentation process, which usually produces acid. Although vinegar is technically an acid, this acid is believed to have an opposite, alkalizing effect on the body.

Apple Cider Vinegar: Alkalize

With our superfood know-how, Pure Planet has taken what we know about alkalinity and oxygenation, and created a refreshing new blend. Welcome, Apple Cider: Alkalize!

Alkalize pairs ACV with nutrient superfoods beets and cherries, boosting oxygenation and alkalizing properties. Plus, the group blends together to make a yummy-tasting drink.
